The Old Man and the Sea

In the eary 1950's Raymond Sheppard and Charles Tunnicliffe were both commissioned by the Reprint Society to illustrate "The Old Man and the Sea" by Ernest Hemingway. The publishers were so pleased with both artists work that they chose a selection from each to appear in the book which has gone on to be one of the most popular of all Hemingway's books. These appear to be the only examples of either artists work from the book in existence.

Of the 20 original ink drawings and scraperboards by Raymond Sheppard we have in the exhibition13 were published in the book and the other 7 are being seen for the first time.
